El Diablo Martini

This is a devilishly good martini for those of you who like it fiery.

It’s very simple to prepare, but you will need gin or vodka (your preference), a little vermouth and some fresh chillies.

Smaller, thin chillies are easier to work with, tend to be hotter and make cute garnishes for what is otherwise a fairly devastating drink.

Take the chillies and slice them finely, but leave some of the length from the point to use for garnishes (although these are optional).

They look like fingers. You can use them to shape little horns on the drink, but given this is very definitely a drink for grownups, you can completely skip this step. It’s fine.

Otherwise, infuse the sliced chilli in your gin or vodka (at least 80ml for every martini you want to serve). Give it a good shake and let it sit for at least two hours, but up to six or overnight would be good. Not too much though or it becomes unpleasant

Once it’s infused enough, place it in the freezer for at least four hours for the gin to cool down sufficiently. If it’s in a jar it doesn’t require quite as much time to cool down as a bottle of gin but at least six hours, if not eight, would be good. Your martini glasses should be stored in the freezer for a few hours as well.

When it’s time to pour, add a little vermouth to your martini glass to taste (use these guidelines to help you choose if you don’t already have a preference). Top up the glass with the chilli-infused vodka.

You can include the chilli slices for additional fire and flair but it’s absolutely fine to leave them out as well.

As mentioned above, you can use the remaining chillies to fashion some makeshift horns. Make small slits in the open ends and slot them onto the glass.

Candles, occult imagery and tarot cards are completely optional, but Hallowe’en approaches so this might serve as some sort of inspiration. Enjoy… safely!
