Maybe you’re flying somewhere you can’t guarantee being served a good martini. Maybe you’re flying to visit a friend and want to enjoy martinis at home rather than going out. Whatever your reason for wanting to transport martini glasses on a flight, here is a super-reliable and relatively easy way to do it using your hand luggage.
You will need to ensure that your airline allowance is sufficient for the space (some budget airlines, especially European ones, will require you to purchase extra baggage for this). You should be fine for most long haul or international flights though.
You will need
- Glasses of the appropriate size for a martini (see the guide for more details).
- A tupperware container or other hard plastic container of appropriate size to store the glasses and fit in your hand luggage.
- Clean clothing to pad the glasses for the journey.
How to Prepare

Place a layer of clothing in the bottom of your tupperware.

Lay your glasses over the top.
Add additional items to the inside of the cups to protect them.

Add in more layers to clothes to separate the glasses from one another (to rescue the risk of them chopping one another). Keep adding layers until the whole container is full.
The level of compactedness should be firm but gentle, like making sushi or a burrito – you don’t want it to burst or break the glass!

Place your tupperware in your hand luggage. You can pad the container further with other items.
You might want to pack a lemon if they are not going to be available in your destination. Otherwise though, it is best if you can obtain your garnishes at your destination.
You might have difficulty transporting liquids on the plane such as pickles or olives in brine. Perhaps you could use tinned olives in your hold luggage though.
You will not be able to take a knife and might also have difficulty with a peeler so it will be helpful if you can access these items in your destination or pack them in your hold luggage if you have any as well.

I would also recommend measuring and weighing your luggage to ensure it is compliant with your airline requirements.

Don’t forget to shop at duty free to collect things like gin, vodka and vermouth.
When boarding, carefully place your baggage in the overhead compartment. Everything should be nicely secure but use an abundance of caution to avoid disappointment at your destination.
When you arrive, carefully unpack your glasses and remove them from the clothing. Give them a light rinse then place them and your spirits straight into the freezer for later.

When the time comes, you can enjoy your customised, self-made, self-delivered martinis in your new destination.
Bon voyage!
Or… you could just order on Amazon (or other delivery service) (about £12 for 2) and have them delivered to the hotel for the day you arrive.
Or… on arrival at hotel have a martini and keep glass in room for multiple fill ups with duty free goodies and leave on your return – voila
Also check restrictions on importing fruit – nothing worse than a cavity search for other fruits in a gaol not of your choice…

Also what glasses are you getting for that price? Are they the right size and feel?

I was flying to the Arabian Desert but yes! For many normal locations this is a good option!
